Coimbatore Junction to Get Modern Food Plaza

The Coimbatore railway junction will have a modern food plaza shortly, said Salem Divisional Railway Manager U. Subba Rao here on Saturday.

The DRM, who was on a maiden visit to Coimbatore after assuming charge, told reporters that the food plaza would come up at the main building which now have VIP lounge, SMR room and a portion of the Station Director’s cabin.

Tenders would be floated soon inviting from leading food joints including MNCs for establishing a modern food plaza., he said.

Mr. Subba Rao said that a passenger lift would be commissioned at Platforms 3&4 before the end of this month and another lift would be commissioned at Platforms 1&2 within six months.

The rakes for the double decker Uday Express between Coimbatore and Bengaluru is ready for operation at the yards of Coimbatore. The Southern Railway headquarters and the South Western Railway are actively considering early operation of the train, as the Salem Division is ready to operate at any time from now, Mr. Subba Rao said.

When asked about continuation of the Coimbatore-Pollachi special passenger train, Mr. Rao said that the train have only 30 % patronage as of now, will take pro active step to continue its operations. However, the special trains running between Sengottai and Tirunelveli has been cancelled due to very poor patronage, he added.

To a query on collecting excess amount by the person handling the unreserved ticket vending machine at the junction, he said he woulde investigate and take remedial action.

Parking space for differently-abled

Two car bays in the parking area would be earmarked for two-wheeler and three wheeler parking space for differently-abled and they would not be charged any fee, he said.

Later, discussing with the officials, Mr. Rao proposed to shift the RMS sorting office to the building on the backside of the station and the current space occupied by them would be utilised for improving passenger amenities.

Mr. Rao also inspected other facilities, including the reservation counters, unreserved ticketing counters, ongoing construction of multi-level two-wheeler car parking lot on the rear side of the station.

Additional Divisional Railway Manager Chandra Pal, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager A. Vijuvin, Station Director R. Sathesh Saravanan were present during the inspection.
