The Mathru Educational Trust for the Blind provides free education, vocational training, skill development, placement, food and accommodation for the differently-abled.

Founders are Gubbi R. Muktha  Mr. S. Shankarappa  Mrs. Gnaneshwari Tejaswini Narayan.

Mathru was started in the year 2001.

Mathru school has 82 residential students where 30girls and 52boys both blind and differently disabled students.

Teaching Staff:

16 – Headmistress and 9 teachers.

1 instructor each for Computer, Physical Training and Dance lessons and

3 for music and instrumental lessons.

7 students graduated in that 4 girls, 3 boys.

3 girls are going to College on their own,1 at home

2 boys going to college (supported by Mathru), 1 employed.

The school has ten classrooms as well as five additional rooms dedicated to enhancing the students’ educational and extracurricular experience.

The school has a van for transportation

The Mathru Centre as of date, has functioning facilities for

  • Vocational Training for literate and non-literate Blind
  • Educating Multiple Sensory Disability (MSD) children
  • Educating Deaf and Dumb children
  • Hostel for College going visually disabled students
  • A residence for blind, destitute women will be added when funds permit.

Mathru has appointed a physiotherapist in order to improve the posture and physique of physically weak Mathru students. As part of its Community service activity, Mathru also offers physiotherapy treatment to the poor who cannot afford to go to hospitals.

In addition speech therapy, physiotherapy, and physical exercises are available for students which would benefit them.

In addition to reading, writing, and basic maths, students also engage in sports, yoga, painting, and various arts and crafts.

During weekends, the students are taken to a nearby sighted school, Kensri International School, in order to allow them to interact with sighted peers and to expose them to the real world. There, the students learn yoga, spoken English, classical music, and several sports like cricket and basketball.

Mathru began an Academy of Music, Art and Drama in 2002 to encourage and exhibit the talents of the students. The Mathru School has won several awards, and has often been in the media for their various talents and skills.

The Mathru School has also released an audio album of the music produced and sung by students in February 2008.

Students participate in several dramas, and have won awards in several competitions. The Mathru Students also have an interest in dance. The students perform group dances for special occasions like World Disabled Day, Environment Day, etc.

The Mathru School participates in several inter-school and state-wide competitions with other visually impaired as well as sighted students.

Extra curricular activities like music therapy, art – craft, drawings, paintings, computer skills and other activities like sports, games – indoor & outdoor, dance & skits, library classes are regularly organized.
